Re-enchanting journalism

A new kind of journalism is emerging online. The role of the journalist is also reinventing itself through new sources of information, and in particular amateur and professional blogs. The "CFJ/CNN European award for the best news blog" was created as a showcase for new journalistic talents. It encourages European journalism students to practice their future profession using new media, and more specifically the blog. Not the "dear diary" kind of blog, nor the stamp collector's blog. More a news blog, where texts, photos, sounds, videos and animations serve the interests of facts, reports and interviews to bring general-interest or specialist issues to the public's attention, and invite comment. CNN International, known for its professionalism in news reporting, and CFJ, a European reference in journalism studies, both believe in this "re-enchantment" of the information profession. Like them, I am confident that the generation of students who take part in this Award will lead the way for interactive, innovative, citizen journalism which, we trust, will draw on the fundamental values of our profession: watertight facts, multiple sources, honesty, clear language, an attractive style, and respect for the individual.
